It’s official! Its on the schedule! You’ve booked a session with me! Woo hoo! Now the panic sets in. How do I prepare myself to be in front of a camera. Don’t stress, I’ve got you! Here are a few tips and tricks on how to better prepare for your upcoming photography session.
The number one question I receive from clients is, “What should I wear?” Well, the easiest answer is…wear something you are comfortable in. Now, I don’t mean those 10 year old sweatpants we all keep around. When you’re comfortable in your clothing you’re likely to feel more confident. There's two sides to comfortability. The first side being literal comfort. Are these jeans too small? Am I even going to be able to walk in these shoes? If your clothing is not comfortable to move in, you’re going to give yourself a time trying to pose naturally! Now to the other side of comfortability. Are you comfortable enough to feel confident? Not all outfits, work. Every BODY is different. I’ve envisioned an outfit, tried it on, and then I could feel the confidence leave my body. Some outfits just don’t work! I am all for trying new styles, but for a photo session I will always recommend focusing on outfits that bring you confidence! Here’s another little outfit tidbit! What will the background be in your photos? You want to stand out but not so much that you look like you don’t belong! If your session is in a beautiful green field, would you want to wear a spring green or a bright pink? Pink! We want that contrast but with matchable colors.
Bringing props to your session can really add a personal touch to your photos. It can be something as simple as blanket to lay on. Props also help with the “what do I do with my hands” question! Adding a simple flower bouquet can bring a romantic touch to a session and also give you something to do with your hands! Props are a must for sessions with the little ones, too. A photo session can be a lot to focus on for the babies! Having cute little toys or noice makers will really bring out those natural smiles and giggles.
I know, I know. This is easier said than done but… get out of your head! No one, especially your photographer, is focusing on your “flaws” as much as you are. This little time you spend in front of the camera is just about YOU! Communication with your photographer can also help you feel more natural. Don’t be afraid to say, “Hey, I don’t really like this angle of myself or will you let me know if my hair starts going the wrong way?” As a photographer, I’m here because of YOU and for YOU. Lastly, HAVE FUN! Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect that you sacrifice being happy. After all, happiness is what makes good memories during a photo session.
